Today's Hijri date
7 Jumada al-Ula 1448 AH
Uses the Umm al-Qura calendar. Where months are started by local moon sighting, dates can differ by a day.
How the Hijri calendar works
The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is lunar: each month starts with the new crescent and lasts 29 or 30 days, so a year has 354 or 355 days — about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. Year 1 AH began with the Hijrah of the Prophet ﷺ in 622 CE.
This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia, which is computed in advance from astronomical criteria. Many countries confirm the start of Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhu al-Hijjah by local moon sighting, so those dates may differ by a day.
